I've Signed the Statement on Christian Faith and Democracy

And I encourage you to consider doing the same.

Dear Friends,

As we enter this critical political season, it's impossible to ignore the profound crisis facing democracy today. From attacks on voting rights to the rise of authoritarianism, democracy as we know it is at risk. But this isn't just a political issue—it’s a moral and spiritual one. As people of faith, we are also at a moment of truth. Our role in defending democracy is more vital than ever.

In my recent book, Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies, I explore how segments of the Christian community have become complicit in this democratic backsliding. Many have embraced authoritarian ideals, seeking to "take back" the nation in the name of God, even if it means undermining democracy itself. This is a stark departure from the democratic tradition that values justice, equality, and human dignity—all principles deeply rooted in Christian teachings.

We must remember that democracy is not just about elections or laws. It’s about a shared commitment to a culture that values pluralism, respects minority rights, and upholds the rule of law. Christians once played a pivotal role in establishing and defending these democratic norms. Now, we face a choice: Will we stand up for these values, or will we allow fear and division to lead us into an authoritarian future?

The time has come to reclaim our democratic witness. As the political landscape shifts, let us commit to being voices for justice, mercy, and the common good. Our faith calls us not to retreat into despair or apathy but to actively participate in shaping a democracy that reflects the values of love and justice. Let’s not falter in this moment of truth.

That’s why I’m so grateful to the scholars and leaders who have crafted the Christian Faith and Democracy Statement. It’s goals are to identify “the challenges facing our democracy and professes a Christian response. Rooted in practical concern, the statement is designed to offer a framework for pastors and lay leaders as they face these challenges in their own congregations and communities.”
