I have read many of your books and so respect all of your great work. You have had a significant impact on the lives of myself and so many others. I understand the need for silence - but know your work does matter. Allow yourself time to mourn, as we all are doing now.
I cried for the first time after a presidential election. After some contemplation I realized it wasn’t so much for my candidate who would have made an amazing leader, but for my country that is so ignorant and unwilling to open their eyes, minds and hearts. After more contemplation, I realized while it is possibly one of our least shining moments in time, it is still only a moment in time, and will eventually pass. Let’s keep praying and supporting each other through these moments. Thank you for your constant efforts and words, they do not fall on deaf ears! They remind us that we are not alone in this struggle, and neither are you! Shalom my friend, shalom.
David, I live in Australia and your recent books on ethics and democracy has helped me, and j have shared them with others.
I have no comprehension why so many conservative evangelicals have voted for Trump, a man who demonstrates in word and actions not a shred of the fruit of the Spirit, indeed the baleful opposite.
Your work is not wasted. It is part of the many resources needed to rebuild a Christianity worth its Lord. Thank you for your work and witness.
Thank you for using your voice. We needed you and need you more now. I do not understand. I am gutted and disgusted. Gutted. Just sick.
What country hires an unhinged convicted felon to be their president? Our country voted against human rights and equality for its citizens, and supported a man who is the poster child for racism, homophobia, & misogynistic behavior. I’m done at least today. It is okay to step back and mourn for a while, but we must join together again after this time of mourning. We must make a difference in the world that will be changing in ways that are unacceptable. We cannot sit back and do nothing. We need leaders with conviction and integrity. You are one of those leaders. Praying for you, for all of us and for the country I love and that my father served to protect. 🫶🏻
My husband and I are mourning with you, David! Surely God calls faithful followers of Jesus to do something in the face of all this. We are prayerfully inquiring what that something is. We believe that our nation is under God’s much-deserved judgment. I feel like we are being passed through a crucible of judgment. May we emerge someday from this crucible as silver that has been both chastened and refined.
David, please don't think of your work as a failure. Remember all of us who've benefited from your scholarship and courage. Consider yourself like the sower, whose seed falls on many kinds of ground. It will take root and grow in the fertile places. I do indeed mourn with you.
You are not a failure by any means. Your writings helped me find a way to a better faith, and I see your name shared around as other people seek the same. Take heart that no matter how many Christians chose the golden calf this week, there is always a faithful remnant. So grieve, rage, and feel all the things, and then find comfort and community in the remnant to start rebuilding.
In my book, you are quite the opposite of a "failure." Your work has touched my heart. You deserve the credit given you by the recent Embracing the Journey article (CNN). Reality bites. But your / our strength does not come from politics, policies, or people, but from God's holy spirit dwelling in us.
Take all the time you want or need to reflect and regroup. I am thinking of words along the lines of "some trust in chariots, some in horses" but we trust in the Lord our God. As you process events, come to your own conclusions and please do share them with us, whenever the time is right. I am optimistic that hope springs eternal.
Thank you for your wise words on this day of sorrow and disappointment for so many of us. I too plan to go a bit quiet and try to listen for God’s voice in this barren landscape.
Failed? No! Your words have given voice to my disappointment and dissonance. This is a crushing setback-yes, but your words have helped me disconnect from many Christian’s while remaining connected to God’s truth and love.
What a very wise way to help your daughter process and also see very clearly, what is happening. I really appreciate your perspectives, and love of the literary beauty of the Bible, I am finding a lot of solace in these newsletters, as I work my way back after some religious trauma. I feel like I exhale and a little more tension dissolves, and it helps me face what is happening in a stronger, deeper place.
I am listening and have been since you spoke at the Reformation Conference. I heard you just last week speak at Randolph Macon College. Your words in person, digital, and print have helped me and many others. Have a rest, regroup, but continue to share your insights and reflections.
"But if it can be said that my main audience for over 30 years has been America’s Christians, who according to exit polls just elected Donald Trump president again, then there can be no doubt that my work has been a failure".
Really? Is this what your work has been for 30 years..........to get people to vote democrat? I would have thought a Christian ethicist should be dedicated to telling the whole truth and leading people to Christ.
The ongoing and ramped-up effort of the MSM, Justice Dept, and social media companies to not only spread "mis-information" but also censor and (now) demonetize conservative voices, should be at the forefront of someone who espouses democracy. Add to this the unequal weights of how the law has been applied, the child sacrifice of late-term abortions and those babies that survive them, the concern of parents who's daughters are playing against and dressing with boys, and the deceitful (maybe 10%-25% truth) told to us about the US border by the Biden administration..............and maybe you can understand how Christians could have voted for Trump. You can disagree with it, but maybe you can understand it.
As a Christ-follower, I often question if politics is an idol for me and what is the balance. At a minimum, I realize that being deceitful (not telling the whole truth) is a sin. Does this thought ever cross your mind? FYI....This is why I now look to people like Michael Shellenberger, Matt Taibbi, and Barry Weiss for information, and the truth. Hope this helps.

Grieving with you all from Canada. This one hurts - a lot. 🫂🇨🇦

Were I keeping a diary, my entry today would likely include words like „and, that’s why I am leaving the Church“.

Yes. Amen.
Amid the devastating disappointment from this election—I feel profoundly betrayed, as a former evangelical, by both family and friends.
Thank you for your words articulating my lack of speech…

Way overstated.
